In a remarkable display of determination and collaboration, a multi-agency operation successfully concluded the rescue of 41 workers who were trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi for a harrowing 17 days. The operation, marked by its unprecedented magnitude, witnessed waves of hope and despair before finally culminating in the safe extraction of all workers on Tuesday evening.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the rescue mission, with the entire government machinery, including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), mobilising its efforts to ensure the workers’ safety. Modi’s proactive involvement included regular updates and close monitoring of the evacuation progress, showcasing a hands-on approach to a crisis that captured the nation’s attention.

At 7:28 pm, the first trapped worker, Vijay Horo, emerged from the tunnel, marking the beginning of the end of a challenging rescue operation. The Prime Minister, in a heartfelt note, termed the success of the tunnel rescue as an “emotional moment” and praised the courage and patience displayed by the trapped workers, hailing it as an inspiration to everyone.

In a 15-minute phone conversation with the rescued labourers, Modi expressed his joy and congratulated them on their resilience. The workers, touched by the PM’s gesture, conveyed their happiness at being rescued and lauded Modi’s leadership. They highlighted the absence of food shortages inside the tunnel and expressed pride in the Prime Minister’s ability to orchestrate successful rescues, drawing parallels with the evacuation of stranded Indians abroad.

The coordination of the rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and various others. The deployment of advanced technologies such as drones, robots, and endoscopic cameras, supported by DRDO, contributed to the complexity and success of the mission.

Former Army Chief and Union Minister VK Singh, along with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, played crucial roles in coordinating and advising the rescue teams. VK Singh’s on-site presence for at least four days underscored the seriousness of the situation.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was actively involved from the moment it received information about the tunnel collapse, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the safety of every Indian. PMO officials, including Dr. PK Mishra and Mangesh Ghildiyal, worked tirelessly at Ground Zero, emphasizing the government’s dedication to leaving no Bharatiya behind, whether in a tunnel or on foreign soil.

The successful rescue of the 41 workers in Uttarkashi stands as a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading from the front in this challenging and inspiring mission.
