In a heated clash between football giants Argentina and Brazil, tempers flared even before the kickoff at Rio’s Maracana Stadium. The match, which eventually started 30 minutes late, saw Argentina secure a 1-0 victory with a 63rd-minute header from Nicolas Otamendi.

The atmosphere turned tense when Brazilian police clashed with Argentine fans in the stands before the game. Argentina’s players, including star Lionel Messi, attempted to calm the situation. At one point, goalkeeper Emi Martinez even confronted a baton-wielding police officer.

The on-field action mirrored the pre-match intensity, with both teams engaging in niggly fouls and confrontations. Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus received a yellow card just five minutes into the game for a clash with Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul.

The first half lacked clear goal-scoring opportunities, with the only shot on goal coming from Brazil’s Gabriel Martinelli, blocked by Argentina’s defender Cristian Romero.

The turning point came in the second half when Otamendi scored a decisive header from a corner, giving Argentina a 1-0 lead. Brazil’s night went from bad to worse when substitute Joelinton received a red card in the 82nd minute for an off-the-ball clash with De Paul.

The match, marred by crowd trouble and on-field tensions, showcased Argentina’s resilience as they claimed victory and secured the top spot in the South American qualifying standings with 15 points from six games. Brazil, on the other hand, suffered their third defeat, landing in sixth place with seven points from six games.
