In a stunning display of dominance, “Barbenheimer” has swept the nominations for the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, securing four nods each for both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” The two blockbuster films, which ruled over last year’s box office, are set to compete for the top prize alongside “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” and “The Color Purple.”

On the television front, the acclaimed series “Succession” leads with five nominations for its final season, closely followed by “Ted Lasso,” “The Bear,” and “The Last of Us,” each earning four nominations. “Succession” is in the running for the best ensemble in a drama series, competing against strong contenders like “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” and “The Morning Show.” Meanwhile, the best TV comedy ensemble category will witness a fierce competition between “The Bear,” “Ted Lasso,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “Barry.”

Warner Bros. Discovery emerged as the media and technology company with the most nominations, securing a total of 20 for its films and shows, including hits like “The Last of Us,” “Succession,” “The Color Purple,” and “Barbie.” Following closely behind is Netflix with 12 nominations, and Apple with 11.

This year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards hold particular significance, given the tumultuous year in the union’s history. Members went on strike for 118 days after contract negotiations with studios broke down, resulting in a new pact in November. The agreement includes pay increases for actors and enhanced residuals for their work on streaming services, along with protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

SAG’s choices often serve as a precursor to the Oscars, and last year’s winners at SAG went on to capture Academy Awards. Notably, the selection of SAG has been a reliable indicator of which films are best positioned for Oscar glory.

The competition for best leading actor in a motion picture features strong contenders, with Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”), and Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”) vying for the prestigious award. The leading actress category is equally fierce, with Lily Gladstone (“The Killers of the Flower Moon”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro), Annette Bening (“Nyad”), and Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) competing for the honor.

In the television realm, the lead actor in a drama series category is “Succession”-heavy, with Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox, and Matthew Macfadyen securing nominations. Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) round out the category. The best actress in a drama series will see a fierce contest between Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Elizabeth Debecki (“The Crown”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony is set to stream live globally on Netflix on Feb. 24, promising an evening of celebration for outstanding performances in the midst of a challenging year for the industry.
