In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a shooting unfolded on the main campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals, with one more in critical condition. The suspected shooter was also found dead.

The Las Vegas Police Department released a statement on social media confirming the casualties and stating that, aside from the shooter, three people lost their lives, while another individual remains in critical condition. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the suspect’s death was a result of police intervention or suicide.

Vincent Perez, a professor at UNLV, described the harrowing experience, recounting the sound of gunfire echoing on campus. “I would say just seven, eight shots, one after another, loud and very loud,” he shared. “As soon as we heard that, we ran back inside, and we realized this is a real shooting, and there’s an active shooter on campus.”

Law enforcement officers responded swiftly to reports of an active shooter on campus. University police spokesperson Adam Garcia mentioned in a briefing that upon engaging the suspect, the individual was found deceased.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department assured the community that there was no longer an immediate threat. However, as a precautionary measure, the main UNLV campus and other university branches were closed for the day. Police continued to search through each building on the campus to ensure the safety of all individuals.

The incident reportedly took place around Beam Hall, a building housing the business school, with additional reports of shots fired in the Student Union. The first reports surfaced around noon, and within approximately 30 minutes, the police confirmed the discovery of the deceased suspect.

The UNLV campus, located less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip, hosts a student population of around 25,000 undergraduates and 8,000 post-graduates and doctoral candidates. The sheriff noted that students appeared visibly shaken, reminiscent of the aftermath of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, which claimed 60 lives and wounded hundreds.

The White House issued a statement on Wednesday expressing their monitoring of the situation in Las Vegas. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of yet another tragic incident, emphasizing the ongoing challenges related to gun violence in the United States.
