Northwest of New Orleans, a series of 25 multi-car pileups on Interstate 55 has left two people dead and 30 injured, leading to the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff reported these incidents in zero-visibility conditions.

Eighteen tractor-trailers crashed in the southbound lanes, and three of them caught fire. The Louisiana Department of Traffic Development says that at the same time, a chain reaction crash blocked the southbound lanes and caused an 11-mile backup.

Between Ruddock and Manchac, there were several accidents that caused both routes to be closed. The dangerous road conditions were made worse by fog and smoke from South Shore marsh fires, which made Monday morning very difficult.

Sheriff of St. John Mike Tregre said that there were 25 accidents on I-55 north and south in three different places. That day, three 18-wheelers were involved, and at least two of them were completely on fire.

It’s a sad story: at least two people have died and 30 have been hurt. Sheriff Tregre thinks that more deaths will be confirmed as the rescue efforts go on. Unfortunately, the accident is a sombre warning of how dangerous bad weather can be on the roads.
