Delhi and its surrounding areas, along with several parts of northern India, experienced earthquake tremors on Thursday afternoon, sending residents into a state of panic. The National Capital Region, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, felt the impact of the seismic activity.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the nodal agency of the Government of India responsible for monitoring earthquake activity, the tremors originated from Afghanistan.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the agency reported.

The earthquake, with its epicenter in Afghanistan, struck at 2:50 pm local time in India and Pakistan, reaching a depth of 220 kilometers. The tremors were felt across the National Capital Region and extended to Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and other parts of northern India.

Reports from Pakistani media indicate that the earthquake was also felt in cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, and various locations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation, and there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. However, the earthquake has left residents and businesses on edge, with people evacuating buildings and seeking safety in open areas.

Earthquake preparedness and response mechanisms have been activated in the affected regions, as both India and Pakistan grapple with the aftermath of the seismic event. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols provided by local authorities.

As seismic activities continue to pose a potential threat to the region, it underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance earthquake resilience and preparedness in both India and Pakistan.
