In a thrilling start to the biathletes’ World Cup in Östersund, Germany’s single mixed relay team, represented by Justus Strelow and Hanna Kebinger, showcased an impressive performance, hovering near the podium for a significant portion of the race. However, a challenging final shooting stage saw them settle for seventh place, missing out on a coveted podium finish.

Strelow, stepping in for the last-minute replacement of Benedikt Doll, delivered a stellar performance, hitting all the targets in his rounds and displaying admirable accuracy. His clean shooting allowed Germany to stay in contention, maintaining a competitive position throughout the race. Strelow’s efforts were crucial in keeping the team in the running for a podium spot.

The single mixed relay saw fierce competition on the Östersund track, with Sweden’s Sebastian Samuelsson and Hanna Öberg clinching victory, closely followed by Norway’s Juni Arnekleiv and Sturla Holm Laegreid, and France’s Julia Simon and Fabien Claude securing the second and third positions, respectively.

Strelow, expressing his satisfaction with the debut, mentioned in a post-race interview, “Otherwise, it was almost perfect. I’m very happy with the debut.” The German relay team, however, faced a setback when Kebinger, grappling with nervousness, encountered difficulties in the last shooting stage, impacting their overall standing.

Kebinger admitted, “I was very nervous. It was a bit of a crappy shot; there’s no other way to put it. I burst at the back. So I affected Justus’ perfect performance a bit.” Despite the setback, the German team’s resilience and strong showing in the initial stages of the relay drew attention and highlighted their potential for future competitions.

The challenging weather conditions, with temperatures dipping to minus ten degrees Celsius, added an extra layer of difficulty to the season opener. Strelow, unexpectedly thrust into the relay races, seized the opportunity and demonstrated composure under pressure.

While the German team missed the podium this time, their performance in Östersund sets an optimistic tone for the season ahead. As the biathlon World Cup progresses, Strelow and Kebinger will be aiming to build on this experience and make their mark in the upcoming competitions. Biathlon enthusiasts are now eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this captivating season.
