In a significant development during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has been expelled from the Lok Sabha following an Ethics Committee report investigating cash-for-query allegations against her. The expulsion led to a walkout by the opposition, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing her dismay, calling it a “sad day for democracy.”

Moitra, who was denied the opportunity to speak during the discussion on the motion to expel her, accused the parliamentary ethics committee of violating rules and claimed she was found guilty of breaching a non-existent code of ethics. She asserted that the committee’s report was a tool to force submission.

The case originated in October when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, acting on a complaint by Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehradrai, alleged that Krishnagar MP Moitra solicited cash and gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for posing questions in Parliament. Hiranandani, in an affidavit to the Ethics Committee, claimed that Moitra provided him with her Parliament login credentials to post questions on her behalf.

The expulsion and the subsequent reactions highlight the growing tension and controversies within the parliamentary proceedings, raising questions about ethical standards and the functioning of the Ethics Committee.
