A minor earthquake near Disneyland on Monday evening disrupted the magical atmosphere as dozens of rides were temporarily closed, leaving visitors with limited entertainment options while employees conducted mandatory safety protocols.

The 3.5-magnitude quake, centered in Fullerton about 2 miles north of Disneyland, struck at 8:10 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A smaller aftershock followed around 8:30 p.m. Fortunately, there were no initial reports of damage at Disneyland or Disney California Adventure.

The seismic activity prompted the temporary closure of at least 35 rides, forcing visitors to find alternative ways to spend their time. Shanna Fogelman, sharing her experience on Instagram, mentioned, “Felt like it was right under our table at Jolly Holiday. Shook things up more than you would think.”

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure swiftly implemented safety measures, evacuating some rides as a precautionary step. The closures affected a majority of attractions, with only a few select rides remaining operational.

By 9 p.m., the Disneyland app indicated that the majority of attractions in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure were temporarily closed. Only a handful of rides, such as Jungle Cruise and the Mad Tea Party at Disneyland, and Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, Mickey’s Philharmagic, and holiday versions of Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree at Disney California Adventure, remained open.

The list of temporarily closed rides included iconic attractions like Big Thunder Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Pirates of the Caribbean, Rise of the Resistance, Space Mountain, the holiday version of It’s a Small World, and the new Adventureland Treehouse at Disneyland.

Over at Disney California Adventure, closed attractions comprised Radiator Springs Racers, Web Slingers, Toy Story Midway Mania, Soarin’ Around the World, and the Incredicoaster.

While no initial damage was reported, MiceChat reassured the public on Instagram, stating, “Damage is very unlikely but guests will be inconvenienced while rides are inspected.”

Visitors took to social media to share their experiences, with Napa photographer Elise Delamare noting, “All rides are down, all lines are closed, and they are telling us after safety protocols are passed they’ll open them back up.”

Despite the temporary disruptions, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure assured guests that safety remains a top priority. As the seismic activity subsided, employees diligently worked to inspect and reopen the affected attractions, allowing the magic of Disneyland to resume its enchanting journey for visitors.
