Renowned Hindustani classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan, aged 55, passed away on Tuesday afternoon in a private Kolkata hospital after a battle with cancer. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating that his death is a significant loss for the nation and a personal loss for her as he was like a brother.

Ustad Rashid Khan, belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, known for medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice, and intricate rhythmic play, was admitted to a private hospital in East Kolkata on November 22, 2023. He had suffered an intracerebral haemorrhage and was undergoing conservative treatment. Despite initial recovery, he developed a hospital-acquired infection, leading to complications. The eminent vocalist was put on a ventilator early in the morning on the day of his demise.

Chief Minister Banerjee highlighted Ustad Rashid Khan’s contributions to the cultural landscape, mentioning that he received the highest civilian award Banga Bibhushan and Sangeet Mahasamman. The late artist was actively involved in various state cultural bodies in an advisory capacity.

Ustad Rashid Khan, born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2022, recognizing his significant contributions to Indian classical music. The funeral arrangements include keeping his body in a mortuary, a gun salute on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the last rites. Ustad Rashid Khan is survived by his wife and two children.
