Toyota is recalling approximately 1 million cars and SUVs in the United States due to a potential defect that could prevent the passenger airbag from deploying in a crash. The recall affects 15 different models from 2020 and 2021, including popular vehicles like the Toyota Camry, RAV4, and Sienna, as well as the Lexus RX350 and ES350.
The problem lies with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, responsible for detecting if someone is sitting in the front passenger seat. In some recalled vehicles, this sensor was improperly manufactured and could short circuit. This short circuit could potentially disable the airbag deployment system, posing a safety risk to passengers.
The OCS sensor estimates the weight of the occupant to determine whether an adult or child is sitting in the front passenger seat. If a child is detected, the airbag typically deactivates to avoid potential injury from the deployment force. However, a short circuit in the sensor could prevent the airbag from deploying even in situations where it’s needed, potentially putting adult passengers at risk.
Toyota says it’s unaware of any injuries related to this issue. The automaker will begin notifying affected owners by mid-February 2024. Owners will be instructed to schedule a free dealership visit, where technicians will inspect the sensor and replace it if necessary.
